7 Screen-Free Language Games for Preschoolers (Korean or Japanese)

Apps and videos have their place, but little kids learn words best when they move, touch and laugh. All you need for these games is a set of picture flashcards (homemade or printed) and five minutes.
Each game works for Korean, Japanese, or any language you're teaching.
1. Look & Say
Hold up a card and say the word together. Then switch roles: your child becomes the teacher and holds up cards for you. Make a few “mistakes” so they can correct you. Kids love this.
2. Find It!
Lay out 6 cards. Say a word (for example 고양이, go-yang-i, cat) and your child points to or jumps on the right card. Start with 3 cards for toddlers.
3. Memory Match
Print two sets of cards, place them face down, and take turns flipping two at a time. Say the word every time a card is flipped. Great for ages 4 and up.
4. Color Hunt
Hold up a color card like あか (a-ka, red) and race to find something that color in the room. Bonus points for saying the word when you touch it.
5. Number Hop
Show a number card, count it out loud in the new language, and hop that many times: 하나, 둘, 셋! (ha-na, dul, set) or いち、に、さん! (i-chi, ni, san).
6. Mystery Bag
Put a few toy foods or animals in a bag. Your child reaches in, feels an object, guesses, pulls it out and says the word. Matches perfectly with food and animal cards.
7. Snack Shop
Set up a pretend shop with real snacks. Your child “buys” a snack by saying hello, naming it, and saying thank you. Practice that sticks because it ends with a treat!
Rotate just 8–10 words a week. Little and often beats a big pile of words all at once.
